The government should overhaul growth approach to curb surge of far right, says top economic expert

Countering populist populism will necessitate Labour to completely overhaul its “uninspiring” approach to improving living standards in disadvantaged communities, a ex- central bank top economist has warned.

Warning Over Policy Approach

Andy Haldane warned that the government’s policy approach were not succeeding to support areas of the country where voters feel overlooked and disenfranchised.

Amid government officials under scrutiny to react to a season of demonstrations, he stated the “single most important thing” the current government could do was to revise its policy direction before the autumn budget.

“It is essential a story of prosperity that isn’t impersonally told from a great distance, but speaks to the personal circumstances and to the future of workers in the ordinary economy.”

Demand for Support in Training and Public Services

Urging the government to assign more power to regional mayors and focus on support in education, infrastructure and affordable housing, Haldane said it was “clear” that a shift in approach was required.

No governing party since decades has seen its polling drop so drastically in its first year in government. Support for far-right political movements has surged, with support from more than a fourth of citizens.

Local Priority Key to Fighting Dissatisfaction

In recent months, the economist cautioned that the government must do more to allocate resources in struggling local areas.

The leader has stated that the country will “stand firm” to far-right activists who use national symbols as excuse for violence and coercion.

Haldane was commenting on the publication of a report for the East Midlands, which recommended the government to hand over more autonomy to the locality to enhance the regional growth.

Setting out ten proposals for Derby, Nottingham and the wider community, the study found that addressing an investment gap could unlock billions in value by the next decade.

Skills and Training Vital for Opportunity

Applying an “progress framework” to assess the assets of the region, it said that the region’s leading business locations could boost thousands of workers’ wages by thousands a year.

The economist said the government had done “not enough” to invest in education in its initial period in office.

“We need to think innovatively about our training framework, from early years to later life, to give people a impression of not being overlooked.”

Otherwise, people’s perception of discontent will only worsen and possibly even escalate.

The perception of people succeeding in their lives, of being supported, is the key cornerstone of reducing disaffection with the ruling administration and therefore doing something to reverse the trend of far-right sentiment.
