The Banking Giant Requires Biometric Data for Corporate HQ Access
The banking leader has notified personnel working at its state-of-the-art main office in New York that they are required to submit their physical characteristics to enter the multibillion-dollar skyscraper.
Shift from Voluntary to Mandatory
The financial firm had initially intended for the collection of physical identifiers at its Manhattan tower to be optional.
Yet, staff of the US's largest bank who have started operations at the corporate hub since August have been sent electronic messages stating that biometric access was now "compulsory".
The Technology Behind Entry
This security method demands personnel to scan their hand geometry to gain access entry points in the main floor in place of swiping their access passes.
Headquarters Details
The bank's headquarters, which reportedly cost $3 billion to build, will eventually function as a home for 10,000 staff members once it is entirely staffed in the coming months.
Protection Reasoning
The banking institution opted not to respond but it is believed that the implementation of biological markers for admission is designed to make the premises safer.
Alternative Access Methods
There are exceptions for certain staff members who will still be able to use a ID card for access, although the criteria for who will use more standard badge entry remains undefined.
Supporting Mobile Applications
In addition to the deployment of physical identifier systems, the organization has also introduced the "Work at JPMC" smartphone application, which functions as a virtual ID and center for employee services.
The platform enables employees to manage external entry, use building layouts of the building and schedule meals from the facility's 19 restaurant options.
Broader Safety Concerns
The deployment of tighter entry controls comes as US corporations, especially those with significant operations in New York, look to increase security following the shooting of the top executive of one of the US's largest health insurers in July.
The executive, the leader of the healthcare company, was fatally shot not far from JP Morgan's offices.
Additional Office Considerations
It is not known if the banking institution intends to deploy physical identifier entry for employees at its locations in other important economic centers, such as London.
Broader Workplace Monitoring Trends
The move comes within discussion over the implementation of systems to track workers by their employers, including tracking physical presence metrics.
In recent months, all JP Morgan workers on mixed remote-office plans were directed they are required to come back to the workplace full-time.
Leadership Viewpoint
The organization's head, the prominent banker, has referred to JP Morgan's new 60-storey headquarters as a "beautiful physical manifestation" of the organization.
The banker, one of the influential banking figures, lately alerted that the probability of the US stock market facing a downturn was far greater than many investors believed.
