Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro stated on this week that an arson attack aimed at his family home earlier this season had caused lasting psychological impact, while calling for leaders to acknowledge that political violence is not a partisan-only issue.

Addressing Political Violence at Eradicate Hate Summit

The governor highlighted the fire attack and broader theme of political aggression during this week’s conference focused on eliminating extremism in the Pennsylvania city, which aimed to examine tools and actions to combat and deter such violence.

He cited multiple high-profile violent incidents, including the assassination attempt of Donald Trump, the killing of a healthcare executive, the fatal attack of a public official and her husband, and the assassination of a political speaker. The common thread, he emphasized, was “people using violence to settle political differences”.

“Officials must take it upon themselves to speak and act with ethical conviction – such acts of aggression have no place in our nation, irrespective of what motivates it, the perpetrator’s identity, or who wields the weapon,” Shapiro affirmed.

Urging Unequivocal Condemnation of All Violence

The governor insisted that individuals must be “clear and unequivocal” in condemning all forms of political violence. He criticized those who have celebrated violence against opponents or called for revenge following such acts.

“Unfortunately, certain voices – ranging from the dark corners of the Internet all the way to the highest office – want to cherry pick which instances of political violence they criticize,” he said. “Doing that only deepens divisions among us and makes it harder to heal. Some may interpret selective condemnation as a tacit approval to commit more violence, provided that it aligns with their worldview or focuses solely on the opposing camp.”

Addressing Demands for Vengeance

After the murder of a political commentator, federal officials reportedly pledged to target left-leaning organizations, claiming without evidence that they were involved in the shooting.

Shapiro warned that these responses of vengeance would deepen the divide and that employing state authority to censor or silence people, businesses, and organizations would only heighten public mistrust.

Personal Account with Political Violence

Shapiro also shared his personal experience with ideologically motivated attack. Earlier this year, on the Jewish holiday, a individual ignited the governor’s mansion while he, his spouse, and kids were inside. He explained waking up to a loud bang on the entrance – a state trooper urging them to leave immediately due to a blaze. Together with his spouse took hold of their children, dogs, and other family members who had assembled for the holiday meal in the very room the arsonist had set ablaze with Molotov cocktails. The individual was armed with a metal hammer that he subsequently claimed he intended to use to attack the governor.

The suspect was indicted with acts of terror, trying to kill, and additional crimes connected with the attack. Authorities stated that Balmer was allegedly motivated by “belief in unfair treatment” toward the people of Palestine. Shapiro is of Jewish faith.

The governor conveyed thankfulness that his family evacuated safely and that no one was injured or fatally harmed.

“However, that does not imply that the attack did not cause emotional scars,” Shapiro stated. “I speak from experience, especially as a father to four kids, knowing that my career decisions exposed them to danger.”

Refusing to Be Silenced

He described the rise in political violence as alarming because it not only aims to harm or eliminate opponents but also to frighten people into silence.

“Today, I stand to declare that I will not be deterred in my work on behalf of the good people of Pennsylvania and I sure as heck will not be silenced,” Shapiro concluded.
