Courageous Rail Staff Member Endures Life-Threatening Wounds During Mass Stabbing Attack on High-Speed Train
A valiant train staff member who stepped in to protect passengers during a mass stabbing incident on a high-speed train has sustained critical wounds, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
Details of the Terrifying Incident
Surveillance video reportedly shows the employee trying to halt the attacker as the train traveled between Peterborough and another station in Cambridgeshire. Bystanders described a terrifying 14-minute period after the train left Peterborough, with bloodied victims fleeing through compartments.
The individual, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, remains in custody for interrogation. Police declared a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.
Crisis Response and Consequences
The incident on the weekend led to 11 people being cared for in medical facilities after the train made an unplanned stop at the station in Huntingdon. Five people have now been discharged from medical care.
A witness filmed the individual waving a large knife and being shot with a stun device as he faced officers on the station. He was allegedly heard shouting, "Kill me, kill me."
“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. My thoughts and those of everyone in British Transport Police are with those injured and their families – particularly the brave member of rail staff whose relatives are being supported by trained officers,” said a high-ranking police officer.
Labor Reaction and Appeals for Measures
Train associations were quick to commend employees and call for increased measures. A union leader said he would be “seeking urgent meetings with government, rail employers and police to guarantee that we have the best possible assistance, tools and effective procedures in operation”.
Another union leader urged the train operator and authorities “to act swiftly to review security, to help the impacted workers, and to ensure that no incident like this happens again”.
Operator Commended for Rapid Thinking
The train driver who halted the service at Huntingdon was reported as being “deeply affected” but “good”, and has been commended by association representatives for doing “precisely what was needed”.
“The driver didn’t halt the service in the middle of two stations where it’s obviously difficult for the emergency services to reach, but he continued going until he got to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost waiting,” explained a association official.
Further Details
Authorities said they received the initial distress reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
An witness described at first thinking if the event was a Halloween joke, but quickly realized from people's expressions that it was real.
Authorities have confirmed there is no evidence to suggest the incident was a terror-related incident and have asked the community to provide with any additional information.
Rail operations on the impacted line are expected to have disruption until Monday, with travelers recommended to postpone their travel where possible.
Individuals with details that could help the investigation are asked to reach police by texting a designated number with a case code.
