Caracas Begins Multiple Days of Military and Cyber Defense Drills After American Strikes on Alleged Drug Boats
Caracas has initiated multiple days of defense operations on its Caribbean island of La Orchila as frictions soar amid Washington's regional operations.
Rising Frictions in the Caribbean
Military assets sent for what the US government labeled an counter-narcotics mission have destroyed at least several crafts and a total of 14 people suspected of moving narcotics across the Caribbean this period.
These actions and a deployment of US warships in the region have fueled worries of a possible armed incursion in Caracas.
National Response
The exercise commanded by the commander-in-chief was dubbed “Caribbean Sovereignty”, stated Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López.
“We are deploying air defense deployments with armed drones, monitoring devices, submarine drones... The operation includes cyber defense maneuvers,” he said.
Public television displayed video of naval units and military ships positioned off La Orchila, where Venezuela maintains a armed forces installation.
Defense authorities said the drills would involve a dozen vessels, 22 aircraft and a fleet of patrol vessels from the “naval special operations unit”.
Context and Allegations
The strategic location is close to the area where the US intercepted and held a Venezuelan fishing vessel for several hours over the past few days.
The leader, whose recent electoral processes were not accepted by the United States and several international actors, has sworn that Caracas will resist any aggression against what he called US “interference” against his homeland.
Washington is offering a $50m bounty for the capture of the president, who is charged with drug trafficking charges.
Rebuttals and Counterclaims
Venezuela has demanded an inquiry of a Washington-led operation on an reported smuggling craft in recent days that killed over a dozen persons.
This was one of several crafts that US President Donald Trump said his country had “knocked off” without offering evidence.
“There is no proof, because officials state it transported narcotics but can this be verified?”, remarked the government representative.
Cabello stated publicly that officials had confiscated more than a significant amount of illegal substances so far this 2025.
“It is the most significant confiscation that has been seized since 2010,” noted Cabello, who – like the president and other high-ranking figures – is under US sanctions.
American Rationale
The US president has explained taking military action by posting on online channels that “violent drug trafficking cartels represent a danger to American safety, Foreign Policy, and crucial objectives”.
Washington has released videos of two of the boat strikes and states it has conclusive material that the victims were US-bound traffickers, without providing details to support the allegations.
The government has consistently denied being a nexus for narcotics.
